Mental Health Therapy Options in Texas

If you live in Texas, whether in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, or even in rural Texas, you probably know someone with mental health needs. “Telehealth” is a new therapy option for those seeking help with mental health issues and it has become a critical resource during the Covid-19 pandemic. American & Global Therapy is among the first providers to bring comprehensive online mental health therapy resources to residents in Texas.

Texas Lifestyle, Mental Health, and Access to Care

The Lone Star State has much to be proud of, from BBQ and Chili and Tex-Mex to the vastness of its natural beauty. Texas is not only the second most populous state in the country, it’s also one of most culturally diverse. Texans are independent and extroverted, bold and friendly (indeed the state motto is “Friendship”). Even the phrase “Texas tough” describes the hardy nature of its inhabitants, their gritty resilience to life’s problems. There is a famous saying that Texas is like a “Whole Other Country”.

However, when it comes to mental health struggles, Texans are just as vulnerable to suffer as the rest of the country. In fact, some have identified the Texan cultural “grit” as being a barrier to seeking help. The problems that face the rest of the country – depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and addiction – are also here in Texas. However, access to mental health is among the worst in the country, with Texas ranking 49 out of 50 in terms of providing access to mental health resources.

The Covid-19 pandemic has only amplified these problems. As a state, our levels of anxiety, stress, addiction, depression, and grief are at an all-time high. Couples are suffering too, where fighting and separation are common and domestic violence is being called “a pandemic within a pandemic”. Yet despite this surge in mental health problems, the need to socially distance has undermined access to care.
